Studying in Budapest is relatively cheap when compared to other parts of Europe or around the world. It offers varieties of scholarships opportunities  and free funding schemes for education, tuition fees in Budapest averages 1500/semester – 3200/semester (Depends on Choice of Program).

From the Stipendium Hungarian Government scholarship to the Erasmus EU scholarships, we all  want free things, and one of the ultimate thing, we definitely will love not to be asked to pay for is our Education.

So here are the top 83 scholarships offered by universities in Budapest, Hungary and how to apply for them. Some of these scholarships are categorised as Internal (offered by the university) and external (offered by the university in partnership with government and private organisations).

1. Central European University |ScholarshipsAvailable on the Study in budapest Mobile App

CEU is committed to attracting talented students and scholars from around the world and provides a variety of merit-based scholarships and tuition awards available to students from any country. In addition to its financial aid, CEU rewards academic excellence of its current students through various research grants and achievement awards.

Students interested in applying for CEU financial aid must submit their application by the relevant application deadline.

  • The CEU Master’s Excellence Scholarship

Covers the full cost of tuition and medical insurance. In addition, excellence scholarship recipients are awarded a monthly stipend of 96,000 HUF, designed to assist with the cost of meals and miscellaneous expenses. Single or shared housing in the CEU Residence Center is offered to a number of scholarship recipients based on academic merit. Students who permanently reside in Budapest are not eligible for CEU housing. Scholarship recipients who were awarded housing in the CEU’s Residence Center have the option to decline it. In such cases, however, CEU does not cover the costs of alternative accommodation.

  • The CEU Master’s Scholarship

Covers the full cost of tuition and medical insurance. In addition, scholarship recipients are awarded a monthly stipend of 50,000 HUF,designed to assist with the cost of meals and miscellaneous expenses. Single or shared housing in the CEU Residence Center is offered to a number of scholarship recipients based on academic merit. Students who permanently reside in Budapest are not eligible for CEU housing. Scholarship recipients who were awarded housing in the CEU’s Residence Center have the option to decline it. In such cases, however, CEU does not cover the costs of alternative accommodation.

  • CEU Doctoral Scholarships

The CEU Doctoral Scholarship covers tuition and medical insurance. In addition, recipients are awarded a monthly stipend of 220,000 HUF calculated to cover educational and accommodation costs (Economics and  Business Administration PhD students receive a monthly stipend of 250,000 HUF). Students need to budget additionally for travel, recreation, and incidentals.

  • CEU General Alumni Scholarship

Funded by donations from CEU graduates, the Alumni Scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate a commitment to community service as well as the potential to help build strong CEU alumni communities around the world after graduation. This scholarship is only available for incoming students and awarded for one academic year.

  • U.S. Federal Loan

The U.S. government offers Federal Stafford Loan for U.S. citizens to assist them with their education costs during their studies at a university. “The Healthcare and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010” made several changes to the federal student aid programs. Beginning July 1, 2010, all new Stafford, PLUS, and Consolidation loans for eligible U.S. students can only be made under the so-called Federal Direct Loan Program. In this program the federal loan comes directly from the U.S. government and not from lenders.

  • Deborah Harding Scholarship*

    Awarded to a Roma student to enroll in the School of Public Policy’s one-year MA in Public Policy.

  • Empiricus Scholarship*

    Partial scholarship for high achieve students from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

  • Future of Big Data Scholarship & Training Program*

    A scholarship and mentoring program for students pursuing the MSc in Business Analytics or the MSc in Finance, who are passionate about programming and data analysis (may be awarded as full or partial).

  • George Soros Leadership Fund Scholarship

    Awarded to students from exceptional circumstances who embody open society ideals.

  • Peter Hangartner Scholarship

    Annually awarded to an outstanding second-year student in the economics department who earns the highest GPA during their first year of studies.

  • Peter A. Nadosy Scholarship

    This scholarship is awarded annually to a Hungarian student entering a CEU MA program who demonstrates exceptional merit and financial need.

  • South Balkan Scholarship

    Supporting students from Albania, Bulgaria, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Greece, and Kosovo entering the School of Public Policy’s two-year MPA program.

CEU Financial Support to Enrolled Students

1. Erasmus Mobility Scheme

Students enrolled at CEU wishing to spend three to 12 months studying at another country’s institution may be eligible for an Erasmus study grant. This grant contributes towards covering the difference in living expenses abroad.

2. Academic Awards

CEU provides incentives for academic excellence and rewards those promising students who, with their work, have shown outstanding academic potential. Academic awards are granted to both master’s and doctoral students.

3. Research and Travel Funds

CEU believes in giving its students opportunities to access as much knowledge as possible. That is why the University provides Travel Grants for students, contributing to the cost of traveling abroad and attending academic conferences. All travel-related costs are covered, as well as conference fees, accommodation and administrative costs. In addition, Short-Research Grants help students enhance their dissertations. Doctoral students are eligible to receive one such award during their second or third year of study. Master’s students may receive such grants organized by their departments.

4. Doctoral Research Support Grant

The Doctoral Research Support Grant Program (DRSG) is designed to help students enrolled in CEU doctoral programs wishing to spend time researching or studying at another recognized university, institute, or research center.  The deadline for applications is April 14, 2017.

5. Praesidium Libertatis Scholarship at Leiden University

CEU degree students who are currently enrolled may apply for the Leiden-CEU Praesidium Libertatis Scholarship that allows them to participate in graduate degree programs at Leiden University. The deadline for applications is February 17, 2017.

6. Winter School Grant

CEU funds a limited number of winter school grants each academic year for doctoral students who have passed their comprehensive examination and exceptional cases the committee will consider applications from 2nd year MA students.

7. Summer School Grant

CEU funds a limited number of summer school grants each academic year for doctoral students who have passed their comprehensive examination. Doctoral students whose comprehensive exam is scheduled for the fall semester after completion of their first-year obligations may also be considered for the grant. The call for summer school grants is usually circulated via email towards the end of the winter semester. The application deadline is May 5, 2017.

  • Metropolitan Academic Scholarship

International students enrolled in our business and communication programs may be refunded the full amount of the tuition fee of the current semester provided they are amongst the top achievers in their field.

  • Metropolitan TATA Scholarship

One of the world’s biggest technology provider companies, TATA Consultancy Services has entered into a long-term strategic cooperation with Metropolitan offering a scholarship for one International Business BA student each semester. Selection is competitive and the scholarship amount is equal to the full tuition fee for one semester.

  • Metropolitan Creative Scholarship

The Grant supports and rewards the most exciting and creative ideas, which are constructive and useful for the Metropolitan community. In 2014 five students were awarded in topics such as the ’Prezi study group’ or the ’be more open-minded, be more international’ initiative. The winners received a grant covering their full tuition fee for two semseters.

  • Metropolitan Start-Up Program

The Program awards innovative project plans by students that also create values. The winners are granted a maximum of HUF 1 million per project allocated for the implementation of the plan. In 2014 such creative ideas were awarded as the Nemundir online role playing game or the establishment of Réka Gottlieb’s own fashion label.

  • Erasmus+ Scholarship

Offers the opportunity to study or work abroad for a semester, gaining international experience, improved language skills and a wide network of international friends. The aim of Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility is to increase student and staff mobility between EU and non-EU countries, work on joint projects and share good practices.

  • Campus Mundi

Program is designed to improve the quality of Hungarian higher education with special focus on employability and increase the international presence and status of Hungarian higher educational institutions. The project supports the mobility of students and helps to increase the international marketing and internationalization of Hungarian higher education.

  • The Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID)

Offer opportunities in more than 70 institutions in Mexico, for studying for a specialization, master’s degree or doctorate, conducting graduate or postdoctoral research, or taking part in an undergraduate or graduate-level academic mobility program.

  • Scholarship Foundation of the Republic of Austria

The scholarships are available to students and researchers who are descendants of forced laborers (in which case a letter of proof is necessary) or come from countries that have exceptionally suffered from the Nazi regime

  • MNB Scholarship of Excellence

Based on its Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy, MNB is strongly committed to and active in the creation of values in the field of economics within the frame of which the Central Bank supports a scholarship program entitled “MNB Scholarship of Excellence”.

Winning applicants are granted the amount of the above scholarship as “MNB Scholarship of Excellence” in monthly installments of HUF 30 000 due for ten months within an academic year (for the period from September to June) in case the student meets the criteria of eligibility for the scholarship.

The MNB Scholarship of Excellence may be granted to 15 students participating in bachelor programs and 1 student pursuing his/her studies at a master program.

  • Ceepus Freemover Mobility Scholarships

For university students and lecturers to Hungary in the winter semester of the academic year 2016/2017. CEEPUS is an acronym for “Central European Exchange Program for University Studies”. Current member countries: Albania, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, the Slovak Republic and Slovenia. Prishtina/Kosovo is also participating.

  • Metropolitan Communication Foundation Scholarship

    For international students in the English language programs

With regard to the pro bono objectives and public interest activities of Metropolitan Communication Foundation, the education of students who hold foreign citizenship and participate in the full-time English-language undergraduate or graduate programs of Budapest Metropolitan University is a worthy cause to support. Students may apply to Metropolitan Communication Foundation for the support of his/her tuition fee specified by Budapest Metropolitan University. Students holding foreign citizenship may apply for the scholarship in each semester during the length of their program in case their corrected credit index is 3.0 or higher. The amount of the scholarship is EUR 1,000/person/semester.

3. International Business School |ScholarshipsAvailable on the Studyinbudapest Mobile App

IBS offers two kinds of scholarships for BSc students, the Starter Scholarship for new students and the Academic Scholarship for enrolled students after the first semester of studies.

  • IBS Starter Scholarships 

The IBS Starter Scholarship offers to cover 50% of the first year tuition fee for applicants for any Buckingham-validated English-language Bachelor programme of IBS who, in addition to general entry requirements, meet the following criteria:

Age limit: 18-25 (at the time of the scholarship application)

IELTS overall band score 6.5 (with at least 6.0 in each component) or TOEFL 90 iBT (the certificate should not be older than 2 years)

Motivation letter

Students should first apply online for the Bachelor programme of IBS and upload the required documents (high school diploma or latest transcript if diploma is not acquired yet, passport and IELTS or TOEFL language certificate). Students are supposed to indicate simultaneously their respective wish to be granted IBS Starter scholarship.

  • IBS Academic Scholarship

BSc students with excellent academic achievement may, upon request, receive a partial scholarship, in which case the IBS Foundation shall cover part of their semesterly tuition fee for one semester, in two categories:

Category I: partial scholarship covering 75% of the next semester’s tuition fee

Conditions of application (with reference to the preceding semester):

the student has delivered at least 80% of the modules defined by the respective standard curriculum

the student has acquired all coursework and examination marks prescribed

the arithmetic average of the student’s module-final marks is at least 75%

the student had no failed exams

none of the student’s module-final marks is lower than 70 percent

Category II: partial scholarship covering 50% of the next semester’s tuition fee

Conditions of application (with reference to the preceding semester):

the student has delivered at least 80% of the modules defined by the respective standard curriculum

the student has acquired all coursework and examination marks prescribed

the arithmetic average of the student’s module-final marks is at least 75%

the student had no failed exams

maximum two of the student’s module-final marks are lower than 70 percent

IBS Academic Scholarship is available from the second semester of year 1, but cannot be used together with the Starter Scholarship.

  • Latin American Master’s Scholarship

The Latin American Master’s Scholarship offers 20% discount from the programme fee for applicants for any Master’s programme that IBS offers in cooperation with The University of Buckingham (Financial Management, Human Resource Management, International Management, Marketing Management).

Applicant must meet the following criteria in addition to the general entry requirements:

must be a citizen of a non-English speaking Central or South American country.

must have IELTS with overall band score 6.5 (with at least 6.0 in each component) or TOEFL 90 iBT. The language certificate should not be older than 2 years.

must attach a motivation letter to the scholarship email (minimum 200 words).

is a scholarship program for foreign students, founded by the Hungarian Government in 2013. The program aims to promote cultural understanding, economic and cultural relations between Hungary and other countries.

Objective of the program:

Successful applicants to the EEA Grants Scholarship – Student Mobility Program can receive scholarship for 6 weeks traineeship in Norway.

Expected amount of the scholarship: 30€/day + 500€ for one-time travel costs

  • GATE

GATE (knowledge management Technology transfer and Education programme) is an Erasmus Mundus mobility project funded by the European Commission (2012 – 2016). It will provide 103 scholarships to students at all levels (Bachelor, Master, PhD, post-doc researchers and staff) from Cambodia, China, Indonesia, India, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Thailand and Vietnam to the European consortium partners.

  • Visegrad Fund

The International Visegrad Fund offers Master’s Scholarships for study/research projects of 1 to 4 semesters.

Citizens of the following countries can apply: Albania (AL), Armenia (AM), Azerbaijan (AZ), Belarus (BY), Bosnia and Herzegovina (BA), Croatia (HR), the Czech Republic (CZ), Georgia (GE), Hungary (HU), Macedonia (MK), Moldova (MD), Montenegro (ME), Poland (PL), the Russian Federation (RU), Serbia (RS), Slovakia (SK) and Ukraine (UA). The same rules are applicable to Kosovar scholars.

Applicants whose current (i.e. at the time of applying) university or employer is further than 1,500 km from the selected host university/institute are eligible for a travel grant.

The following scholarship schemes are available:

  • Intra-Visegrad Scholarships

For scholars coming from one of the V4 countries (CZ, HU, PL or SK) who plan to study in any V4 country other than that of their citizenship.

  • Out-Going Scholarship

For outstanding students or Master’s degree holders from V4 countries to study at acknowledged universities or institutes of the respective national academies of sciences in AL, AM, AZ, BY, BA, HR, GE, MK, MD, ME, RS and UA. Please note that the same rules are applicable to Kosovar universities.

  • In-Coming Scholarships

For outstanding scholars who wish to study at accredited universities or institutes of the respective national academies of sciences in V4 countries and who are citizens of the following countries: AL, AM, AZ, BY, BA, HR, GE, MK, MD, ME, RU, RS and UA. Please note that the same rules are applicable to Kosovar scholars.

  • Scholarship Program for Belarusian Students

For scholars coming to the V4 countries from Belarus (altogether 60 semesters annually). As of 2009, the International Visegrad Fund opens a sub-program for Belarusian scholars who may apply for 1- to 4-semester studies at all accredited public or private universities in the Visegrad Group countries.

  • Scholarship Program for Ukrainian Students

For scholars coming to the V4 countries from Ukraine (altogether 60 semesters annually).

  • Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program in Turkey

The Hungarian Government launched a new scholarship program, “Stipendium Hungaricum”, in autumn 2013 with the ambition of attracting more and more foreign students to study in Hungary. The Cooperation Programme between the Government of the Republic of Turkey and the Government of Hungary in the Fields of Education and Science for the Years 2014-2016 was signed in December 2013.

The Hungarian Party shall offer scholarships for 150 Turkish students per year to pursue studies in Hungary.

These scholarships are handled by Balassi Institute Hungarian Scholarship Board Office which works in close cooperation with the Hungarian Ministry of Human Resources.

The pre-selection of the candidates will be carried out by the Ministry of National Education in Turkey.

  •  Hungarian State Scholarships

Through the Hungarian Scholarship Board Office, the Hungarian Minister of Education and Culture offers scholarships for foreign students and professors of higher education institutions as well as research fellows who intend to gain further professional experience in Hungarian institutions of higher education or research.

In 2005 the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Hungary established a „scholarship pool”, a scholarship system of various types of scholarships, allowing for applications from the following countries/territories:

Citizens of the following countries may only apply through their national scholarship offices, on the basis of bilateral agreements:

  •  Erasmus+

The Erasmus Mundus programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education which promotes the European Union as a centre of excellence in learning around the world. It supports European top-quality Masters Courses and enhances the visibility and attractiveness of European higher education in third countries. It also provides EU-funded scholarships for third country nationals participating in these Masters Courses, as well as scholarships for EU-nationals studying at Partner universities throughout the world.

Students applying for a joint or double degree programme which is supported by Erasmus Mundus programme of the European Union, can also apply for a grant.

The DAAD’s extensive scholarship database for foreign students, graduates and academics offers applicants a wide range of tips and information to help them successfully apply for a scholarship for a course of study, a research assignment or a teaching assignment in Germany. For further information

  • AIC International Students Scholarships Programme in China

Alcanta International College (AIC) is offering scholarships for international students to excel at AIC and beyond. Students who apply to any AIC programme as full-time international students are eligible to apply for these scholarships. All scholarships apply only to the tuition fee.

What does it cover? All scholarships apply only to the tuition fee. Recipients will be required to pay other fees such as boarding fee, meal fee, medical insurance costs and other expenses incurred for the programme that they are admitted to.

Academic Scholarships -Value up to 100% of the tuition fee

Merit Scholarships – Value up to 50% of the tuition fee

Financial Scholarships – Value up to 30,000 RMB.

  • NMG-NUST JOINT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN CHINA

Nanjing University of Science and Technology (NUST) and Nanjing Government have jointly set up the scholarship program commencing from 2014 outstanding international students. The scholarship is applied for on a yearly basis. 30 students will be selected for Type A scholarships, 40 students for type B scholarships and 30 students will be selected for type C scholarships. Students who are granted the type A scholarship will be exempted from application fee, tuition, lodging expenses and medical insurances. Students who are granted the type B scholarship will be exempted from application fee, tuition and medical insurances. Students who are granted the type C scholarship will be exempted application fee, medical insurances and part of tuition. All three types of scholarships include monthly allowances.

Eligibility:
– Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens who are in good health.
– Education background and age limit
– Applicants for undergraduate programs must have senior high school diploma when register and be under the age of 28.
– Applicants for master degree program must have bachelor degree when register and be under the age of 35.
– Applicants for doctoral degree program must have master degree when register and be under the age of 40.
– Agree to obey the relevant laws of the PRC and meet the admission requirements of the host university.
– Applicants must have a good academic record and merits.
– Applicants should not be the awardees of other scholarships offered by Chinese government or local governments at the same time.

Scholarship student’s affairs are managed according to the relevant regulations of NJMG-NUST Joint Scholarship. Scholarship students must go through the Annual Review of the NJMG-NUST Joint Scholarship Status. Scholarship will be terminated if the student fails to fulfill the requirements. Applicants can submit the application materials to the School of International Education, Nanjing University of Science & Technology, by post mail or in person.

Number of award(s): 30 students will be selected for Type A scholarships, 40 students for type B scholarships and 30 students will be selected for type C scholarships.

Special Scholarships for students on the Masters of Professional Practice (MProf) in Computer Games Development

The University’s Institute of Art, Media and Computer Games has been awarded 40 scholarships for suitably qualified Scottish and other EU students, to study on the Master of Professional Practice Degree in Games Development – the course that is run with the Computer Games Industry within the national Centre of Excellence for Computer Games Education at Abertay University. The Scholarships will pay for the whole tuition fee for the programme (normally about GBP 3,400 for a Scottish or EU student – over GBP 10,000 for a non EU national) so there will be lots of competition for these places.   This is likely to be the last year that this special scholarship will be available, so we strongly recommend that interested applicants apply this year. More Information

Each year, Shanghai Municipal Government offers 3 types of government scholarships for international students. What does it cover?

The scholarship contains:
Type A (full scholarship): Students who are granted the type A scholarship will be exempt from application fee, tuition, elementary learning materials expense and lodging expense and will be provided with comprehensive medical insurances for free. The Master’s and Doctoral degree candidates will enjoy monthly living allowance of CNY2,000 RMB and CNY1,700 respectively.

Financial Aid

Students in good academic standing may apply for financial aid. McDaniel College has established a scholarship program for McDaniel Budapest students to facilitate their transfer to Westminster for the mandatory “American Experience” semester or for the upper two years leading to the BA degree to enable them to study on the main campus at a reasonable cost. The financial aid awards (reflected in the special tuition rate for McDaniel Budapest students) will be made on a one-year basis, and will be renewable if the student has maintained the required academic standing. The minimum requirement for any financial aid granted to students transferring to Westminster is an overall Grade Point Average of at least 2.0. The ERASMUS programme, which stands for EuRopean Community Action Schemes for the Mobility of University Students, was set up by the European Union (EU) with the goal of improving academic excellence in higher education through the exchange of students within the European Union.The ERASMUS programme is open to students attending universities and other higher education institutions in countries that have an active bilateral agreement in place with other EU member states. Hungary has been participating as a full member of the ERASMUS programme since 1997.

Students participating in the ERASMUS programme spend a minimum of three months, and maximum one year at the partner university.  Courses taken at the partner institution can only be approved if these are part of the sending institution’s curriculum.

The ERASMUS programme provides students with scholarships for the duration of their studies abroad. This helps cover the students’ emerging costs, such as transportation, accommodations, food, and insurance.
